Since ancient times it has been inhabited by several Greek tribes including Pelasgians, Cretes and Macedonians. After the Asia Minor Disaster of 1922 many Greeks from the coasts of Asia Minor and especially from Cesme Smyrna settled on the hospitable island.
Today it belongs to the elite of the islands of Greece, having the capital of Skiathos Town on its southeastern side. Today, there is the Naval Museum and the cultural center of Skiathos. See also the imposing Castle of the 14th century, a medieval castle and old capital of the island. Access is by car and then by walking 1800m to it or else by the sea by boat.
One of the most important Greek writers, Skiatitis Alexandros Papadiamantis, with the most important works, Fonissa and Gyftopoula, lived on the island. Its residence is a museum space open to the public.
Beautiful churches like the Virgin Mary of the Assumption and the Metropolitan Church of the Three Hierarchs dominate the area.
