At the western tip of the European Union, the part of the Iberian Peninsula bathed by the Atlantic Ocean is occupied by this colorful country. The islands of Azores and Madeira complete a wonderful puzzle of colors and rich history.

Its capital is Lisbon and its largest cities are Porto in the north, Braga, Aveiro, Faro in the south, and the capital of the Algarve region, Coimbra, Viseu and the wonderful romantic Sintra within walking distance of Lisbon.

A special culture influenced by Mediterranean European culture, it ranks 17th in the world with 15 UNESCO World Heritage Sites on its land. The traditional Gothic architectural style of its buildings, known as the 'Manuelino', finds its typical imprint on the 'Belem Tower' in Lisbon.

Famous Seafarers, its sailors in the Age of Discoveries led the country and made it a colonial power. Prince Henry the Seafarer promoted the explorations and the well-known Vasco da Gama paved the way for India and South Asia. After many centuries of maintaining its colonies, in 1999 it handed over its last ‘Macau’ colony to China and in 2002 it officially recognized the independence of ‘East Timor’.
